If you caught last week’s article on Edith Wharton, trail-blazing Gilded Age author and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, you’ll know I’ve got Buccaneers fever this month. I’ll be publishing pieces throughout April celebrating the last, yet sadly incomplete, novel Wharton ever wrote – and this week, we’re exploring the phenomenon of British governesses in elite US households.

Enter: Laura Testvalley. One of the novel’s central characters, she is composed, observant, and unmistakably English. Highly educated in languages, the arts, and all things deportment, she offers something altogether different from the world of ambition and exuberance dominating Madison Avenue and Newport’s salons.

She may be a fictional creation, but she is far from imagined. Women like her occupied a very real and very curious position within Gilded Age society, particularly in the homes of wealthy American families eager to secure not just fortune, but legitimacy.

Because, as we know, it wasn’t enough to be filthy rich in the nineteenth century; one had to be refined. And refinement, as many American families believed, was something that could be bought…

That person was Alberta Sturges, twelve years old, American, living in Paris with her family in the winter of 1890. And the performance she was sent to see was Jeanne d’Arc, starring Sarah Bernhardt.

Alberta had been keeping a diary since she was ten years old, writing in a mixture of English and French, in the cramped and earnest hand of a child who understood, even then, that things were worth recording.

She was not from a famous family. She was not herself famous. She was a bright, observant girl growing up between London, Paris, New York and Scotland — attending concerts, visiting Versailles, watching the illuminations on Regent Street for the silver wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales, noting the death of Emperor Frederick of Germany (”at 11 o’clock, it was very sad”), going to hear the child prodigy Otto Hegner play piano (”He is eleven years of age, and he looks so happy”). She went horseback riding every week on the Avenue d’Iena on a horse called Brilliant. She had her portrait painted for a salon. She read everything she could get her hands on.

January 1890 found her at 50 Avenue d’Iena, Paris, newly moved in, contentedly skating on the stone terrace in the garden and writing long letters to her mother in America. It was a full and happy life. But nothing in it had prepared her for the evening of January 21st.

Last month’s article on Consuelo Yznaga, the real-life Cinderella story of the Gilded Age, inspired me to pick up Edith Wharton’s The Buccaneers (readers may remember that Wharton’s character Conchita Closson was said to be inspired by Consuelo, with whom she was close). It’s a novel of ambition, loneliness, and desire, and an ode to women constrained by the times and traditions of a bygone era — both those who chose to rebel, and those who accepted their lot, with or without grace.

There is something irresistibly sharp in Wharton’s portrayal of young American women navigating the rigid hierarchies of British aristocracy. So much so that I’ll be publishing content throughout April inspired by this classic tale. But before we meet the charming heiresses themselves, let’s find out more about the woman who brought them to life.

Because Edith Wharton was not merely an observer of this world. She was born into it…

Born into “Old New York”

Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones in 1862 into one of New York’s most established and socially prominent families. The Joneses belonged to what was often called “Old New York”, a tightly controlled social elite whose wealth predated the industrial fortunes of the late nineteenth century. Their status was not simply financial, but cultural, rooted in lineage, etiquette, and an unspoken understanding of how one ought to behave. It was a world governed by rigid, unbending rules, and for women, they were particularly exacting.

Fun fact: the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” is said to have been attributed to their family. So you can see the level of wealth and prestige we’re dealing with here…

Young ladies of Wharton’s class were expected to marry well, uphold family reputation, deliver heirs (sons preferred, naturally), and move through society with grace and restraint. Intellectual ambition was not encouraged. Independence, even less so.

Yet from an early age, Wharton showed a curiosity for a life outside the one expected of her. She was largely educated at home and developed a deep love of literature, languages, and European culture. While formal academic opportunities for women were limited, she pursued knowledge with quiet determination, reading widely from the non-fiction available in her father’s library (her mother had forbidden her from reading novels until she was married) and thinking critically about the world around her. She is said to have viewed the fashions and etiquette imposed on young women in the pursuit of marriage as superficial and oppressive.

Already, there was a tension forming between the life she was expected to lead and the one she might have chosen for herself.

Marriage and Constraint

In 1885, at the age of 23, Edith Newbold Jones became Edith Wharton after marrying Edward “Teddy” Robbins Wharton, a Boston banker from a similarly established background who was twelve years her senior. On paper, it was a suitable match. In reality, it proved far more complicated.

Teddy struggled with severe mental health issues, now widely understood by historians to have included depression and possibly bipolar disorder. Wharton herself suffered from bouts of poor mental health, a mix of depression and anxiety coined “nervous exhaustion” by the physicians of the era.

The couple’s union was childless, despite the significant pressure we can assume Wharton was under to start a family (motherhood being considered a woman’s highest calling), and the marriage, though initially stable, became increasingly strained over their 28 years together, particularly as Wharton’s intellectual and creative ambitions grew.

The expectations placed upon her within elite society did little to accommodate those ambitions. Her family and wider social circle failed to encourage her writing dreams, despite some early successes published under pseudonyms in the late 1870s and 80s, while her mother, Lucretia Stevens Rhinelander Jones, was actively critical of them, leading to a push-pull relationship in which Wharton would vie for her mother’s approval for much of her life. Though she continued to write, she would not publish anything more until October 1889, when her poem “The Last Giustiniani” appeared in Scribner’s Magazine.

Marriage, at least for women, was not designed to foster personal fulfilment. It was a structure of stability, respectability, and duty.

Love Beyond the Rules

Around 1907, as their marriage continued to deteriorate, Wharton formed a deeply meaningful and passionate extramarital affair with Morton Fullerton, a journalist and writer based in Paris. Their relationship is documented in surviving letters and has been widely studied by scholars.

It was, by all accounts, emotionally and intellectually significant, and Fullerton is widely believed to have been the love of Wharton’s life. Despite this, the couple was never “officially” together. She was married throughout the affair, while he had a reputation for non-commitment, leaving a complicated string of past lovers and broken engagements in his wake.

For a woman of Wharton’s standing, such a relationship carried real social risk. Reputation, particularly for women in elite circles, was fragile. Once the affair came to an end, Wharton asked Fullerton to burn her letters for fear of a scandal. He didn’t (go figure), but thankfully, their relationship wasn’t confirmed until the late twentieth century, when their secret messages were released to the public.

Wharton eventually divorced her husband, Teddy, in 1913, after 28 years of marriage.

Writing as Power and Independence

If Wharton’s personal life conspicuously pushed against the boundaries of high society, her writing quietly criticised them.

She began publishing her work consistently from the 1890s — she didn’t release her first major novel until she was 40, shortly after the death of her mother — but it was in the early twentieth century that her literary career really began to flourish. Her novels explored the very world she had been raised in, exposing its contradictions, its quiet cruelties, and its rigid expectations.

In The House of Mirth (1905), she examined the precarious position of women whose social value depended upon marriage and wealth. In The Age of Innocence (1920), for which she later became the first ever woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, she offered a nuanced portrait of duty, desire, and societal constraint in 1870s New York. Writing gave Wharton something that society had not: financial independence, intellectual authority, and perhaps most importantly, a voice. She was no longer a mere cog in the system; she was its documentarian.

Over time, Wharton’s connection to America began to shift. She spent increasing amounts of time in Europe and eventually settled in France, where she lived for much of her later life. From abroad, she could reflect more clearly on the society that had shaped her. Perhaps it gave her a fresh perspective on its rituals, hierarchies, and limitations, transforming them from simple lived experiences into subjects of careful observation and critique.

Enter: The Buccaneers

It is within this context that The Buccaneers takes on particular significance.

Written later in her life and left unfinished at her death in 1937, the novel follows a group of wealthy American girls, dismissed as nouveau riche by “Old New York”, who embark on a London social season in search of acceptance and instead find themselves navigating marriage within the British aristocracy. It is a story shaped by transatlantic ambition, cultural misunderstanding, and the emotional cost of social aspiration.

Though fictional, the world it depicts is deeply rooted in reality. During the late nineteenth century, many American heiresses did indeed marry into British noble families, bringing with them dowries fat enough to sustain often financially strained historic estates. Despite this, heiresses were often met with closed ranks, cold shoulders, and a longing for the homes they had left behind.

Wharton understood this world intimately, and she had a lot to say. So she used her greatest skill to her advantage: storytelling. Thus, one of America’s greatest classics was born.

The Woman Behind the Words

What makes Edith Wharton such a compelling figure is not simply that she wrote about the Gilded Age, but that she lived within it, questioned it, and ultimately chose to step beyond it. She was, at once, an insider, an observer, and a critic, and it is this perspective that gives her work its enduring clarity.

As we move through Buccaneers-inspired content this month, exploring the lives of debutantes, governesses, and heiresses who crossed the Atlantic in search of status and security, it is worth remembering that Wharton’s tale, though fiction, charts a very real world in remarkable detail, guided by her own lived experience.

She saw its delights and its charms. She understood its rules. And, perhaps most importantly, she recognised its cost.

It’s a story we’re all pretty familiar with. But did anything like this ever happen in the Gilded Age? Could a woman on the margins truly ascend into high society? Not as a mistress, dogged by scandal, but as a duchess?

The closest we come is Consuelo Yznaga.

While she was not sweeping hearths or fleeing a cruel stepmother, her life offers something far more interesting than fiction: a real transatlantic transformation that reveals how the nineteenth century manufactured its own Cinderellas (albeit without the iconic glass slipper).

Before the Ball: A Family on the Fringes

Consuelo Yznaga was born in 1853 in New York City to a Cuban family of Spanish descent. Her father, Fernando Yznaga del Valle, was a landowner and diplomat with strong ties to Cuba, and the family moved comfortably within transatlantic society, dividing their time between New York and Europe. They were well-connected and cosmopolitan, though not part of Britain’s hereditary aristocracy. And in an era completely obsessed with lineage, pedigree, and names heavy with history, that mattered.

And yet, she possessed the one currency that often trumped birth: social magnetism.

Contemporary accounts consistently described her as a striking beauty, poised and eloquent. In her teenage years, she was part of the group known as the Buccaneers, whose lives inspired her friend Edith Wharton’s novel of the same name. Once grown, she moved through Parisian society with ease, which in the 1870s functioned as a kind of glamorous neutral ground between American ambition and British tradition.

The Meeting: A Duke in Need of a Duchess

It was in Europe that Consuelo met George Montagu. He was young, aristocratic and, crucially, financially strained. His English estates required money, while Consuelo’s family required acceptance. After a whirlwind romance, in which some sources suggest Consuelo fell head over heels for the charming George, they married in 1876.

When Lady Bridgerton, dutiful mother, widow of 15 years, and matriarch of the eponymous Bridgerton family, develops a tender relationship with a gentleman, she finds herself flustered and uncertain as she endearingly asks her trusted housekeeper the proper way for one to invite a man to stay for ‘tea’. The implication is clear, the tone is sweet, and the vulnerability of a woman looking to get back on the horse (sorry!) after so many years alone is deeply relatable.

While Bridgerton is set in the Regency era, widowhood in the Gilded Age carried similar emotional, social, and practical complexities. A widow was no longer a wife, but she was no longer a maiden either. Instead, she occupied a liminal space that could be heavy with grief yet unexpectedly rich with possibility. There’s the brilliance of diamonds and the depth of sapphires, and there’s also something more layered: a shimmer made up of ambition, transatlantic marriages, social reinvention, and an understanding that, while wealth could open doors, it can’t always secure belonging.

When American heiresses crossed the Atlantic in the late 19th century, they brought more than fortunes. They brought jewels. And those jewels became part of a visual language that still defines the era: tiaras worn beneath chandeliers, in drawing rooms, at court presentations, and at great society balls where lineage and money met in uneasy partnership.

These tiaras were declarations as much as they were ornaments.

Today, those glittering headpieces form a cornerstone of the Countess of Sandwich Society. Each tier reflects a jewel and a story. They also reflect the women and the moments in history when the worlds of America and Britain became irrevocably intertwined.

Sapphire: The Vanderbilt Tiara and the Architecture of Ambition

Few names carry the weight of Gilded Age mythology quite like Vanderbilt.

Consuelo Vanderbilt entered British aristocracy in 1895 when she married the 9th Duke of Marlborough in a union that has since become emblematic of the era’s transactional marriages.

American money, British title. Fortune exchanged for lineage.

For her wedding, the Parisian house of Boucheron created an extraordinary diamond tiara, set with large pear-shaped stones in a flowing garland design. It was a masterpiece of Belle Époque craftsmanship, designed to catch candlelight and signal unmistakable presence in the great rooms of aristocratic life.

While this famous tiara was composed of diamonds, the wider Vanderbilt collection included remarkable coloured gemstones, including sapphires of exceptional depth and clarity. Together, these jewels formed part of a visual language of wealth that moved across continents and into Britain’s great houses.

The sapphire tier, then, draws on that broader world of Vanderbilt splendour that wasn’t so much a single object, but an atmosphere. The spectrum of blue that suggests depth, intellect, and legacy.

Pearl: The Curzon Tiara and the Performance of Elegance

If sapphires announce, pearls suggest.

Mary Victoria Leiter, later Lady Curzon, became one of the most celebrated American-born figures in the British imperial world. As Vicereine of India, she occupied a role that was as theatrical as it was political, moving through ceremonies, courts, and imperial spectacle with extraordinary poise.

For the Delhi Durbar of 1903, the Parisian house of Boucheron created a diamond tiara in a distinctive fleur-de-lis design, worn as part of one of the most iconic ensembles of the Edwardian period.

Yet beyond the tiara itself, Lady Curzon’s image was shaped by a broader aesthetic of softness and luminosity. Pearls, frequently worn in her jewellery and across elite society, became part of the visual language of refinement that defined the age.

The pearl tier, then, draws on that cultivated elegance. Not a single jewel, but a sensibility and a glow that signals composure, grace, and the art of moving through the world with precision.

Emerald: The Manchester Tiara and the Spectacle of Arrival

The phenomenon of the American heiress marrying into the British aristocracy was well established.

Helena Zimmerman, daughter of a railway magnate, married the 9th Duke of Manchester in 1900. With her came not only wealth, but a style of glamour that was unmistakably modern.

The Manchester Tiara itself was a spectacular diamond creation by Cartier, but Helena Zimmerman’s jewellery collection included striking emerald pieces, often worn alongside it, creating a visual language of brilliance and colour that defined the era.

This is the language of arrival and of entering a world and reshaping it in your own image.

Ruby: The Language of Power

By the early 20th century, the world of the Gilded Age heiress had expanded beyond marriage into performance. Court presentation, state occasions, and grand evenings demanded a visual language that could be read instantly.

Consuelo Vanderbilt and women like her moved through these spaces shaped by expectation, spectacle, and the careful construction of presence.

Within aristocratic jewellery of the period, ruby-set pieces formed some of the most striking elements of court dress. Necklaces, brooches, and bodice ornaments set with deep red stones created a visual intensity that stood apart from the cooler brilliance of diamonds.

These were not subtle jewels; rather, they were designed to register across vast rooms, beneath chandeliers and electric light, where colour carried further than sparkle alone.

Diamond: The Montagu Tiara and the Continuity of Lineage

Not every American woman entering the British aristocracy was simply marrying into a title. Some were entering into something far older, and making love matches while they were at it.

Alberta Sturges Montagu—American heiress and writer—married the 9th Earl of Sandwich in 1905, becoming the Countess of Sandwich, joining a family whose history stretched back centuries.

At her wedding, Alberta wore the Montagu family tiara, a diamond piece passed down through generations and worn at significant moments in the life of the family. Like many aristocratic jewels, it formed part of a larger tradition of inheritance, where objects were not simply owned, but stewarded.

Nearly a century later, I wore the same tiara at my wedding, following in Alberta’s footsteps as an American from Chicago who became a Countess of Sandwich.

From Jewels to Living History

What connects these tiaras is what they represent.

They belong to a moment when history was being negotiated in drawing rooms, in marriages, in letters, and in the powerful decisions that shaped entire families. American women crossing the Atlantic altered British aristocracy. And in doing so, they left behind objects that still carry their presence.

But these stories do not survive on their own.

Many of these women played a role in restoring, shaping, or sustaining the great houses they entered…and some of them still stand today. Historic houses require constant care, and the lives behind the portraits and the jewels only continue to exist because someone chooses to remember them.

This is where the Countess of Sandwich Society for the Preservation of Britain’s Living History begins.

In Season 4 of Bridgerton, the dashing Benedict makes an offer that he believes is generous. He asks the maid and illegitimate daughter of an earl, Sophie, to be his mistress. Marriage, or even a relationship, in his world? Impossible. Their backgrounds are too different, and high society simply wouldn’t allow it. So he presents what he sees as the next best thing: comfort, protection, and financial security. Surprisingly (at least to him), Sophie refuses. She understands what the offer truly represents; to be a mistress is to accept a life without legitimacy.

Despite the Regency period coming almost a century before, the logic behind Benedict’s proposed dynamic would have been entirely recognisable to the men and women of the Gilded Age. But what did the arrangement mean for those involved, and who really benefitted from the exchange?

How Common Were Mistresses?

Extramarital relationships among elite men were not rare in the late nineteenth century. They were, however, expected to be discreet.

In Britain, divorce remained difficult and socially damaging well into the late Victorian period. The Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857 had made civil divorce possible, yet didn’t level the playing field between the sexes. A husband could obtain a divorce on the grounds of adultery alone; a wife, meanwhile, had to prove adultery plus additional offences such as cruelty, sexual abuse, or desertion.

In such a context, it was often easier for a wealthy married man to maintain a mistress than to seek a divorce that could potentially affect property settlements, political prospects, or, most damaging of all, their reputations.

One of the most famous examples is Edward VII, long before he ascended the throne. As Prince of Wales, he conducted numerous extramarital relationships during his marriage to Alexandra of Denmark. Among his best-known companions was Alice Keppel (eagle-eyed readers may remember her from last month’s article, Gilded Age Deep Dive: The Era’s Most Scandalous Forbidden Love Stories), with whom he maintained a relationship from the late 1890s until his death in 1910.

Their liaison was widely known within aristocratic circles, with even Alexandra herself believed to have tolerated it, provided that discretion was observed, and public duties were maintained. The key was the performance. A man may have been permitted to indulge (albeit with resignation from his wife), under the proviso that he wouldn’t embarrass her publicly…

Not the heiress herself.

Her mother.

Because if there is one figure who appears again and again in the retelling of the so-called “Dollar Princess” phenomenon, it is the formidable American mother hovering just outside the ballroom — the Pushy Mama — the woman determined to propel her daughter across the Atlantic and into the waiting arms of a British title.

In the popular imagination she is almost theatrical: part strategist, part diplomat, part general quietly directing a campaign through London Seasons, country house weekends, and exquisitely timed introductions. She understands dowries, precedence, and the delicate mathematics of social advancement. Above all, she understands that Europe possesses something America does not yet quite have — centuries of lineage and legitimacy.

The character has become so familiar that it almost feels inevitable.

And yet, like most stereotypes, it tells only part of the story.

Betty Sturges and the Allure of Europe

Because Alberta Sturges Montagu — whose extraordinary archive of letters and journals I have been working on for the past several years — did indeed have an ambitious mother.

Her name was Betty MacLeod Sturges, later Betty Leggett, and she adored Europe with the sort of enthusiasm that only an American encountering the Old World for the first time can truly sustain.

Before marrying Alberta’s father, the Chicago businessman William Sturges, Betty’s own father insisted she undertake a European tour — the sort of cultural pilgrimage that wealthy American families increasingly saw as essential for refinement. The trip was meant to broaden her horizons.

Instead, it permanently shifted them.

Betty returned home completely enchanted by European society. When she married William Sturges, a man nearly thirty years her senior whose fortune derived from Chicago’s booming grain trade, she also secured the means to continue inhabiting that world.

There is a family anecdote that captures her decisiveness rather perfectly. One day at luncheon William turned to her and asked rather casually whether she and the children might sail for Europe the following day so that the house could be let.

“Of course,” Betty replied.

They left the next day.

The journey was meant to last six weeks.

They stayed for six years.

Aside from captivating audiences once more with gorgeous gowns and scandalous storylines, this season lingers on whispered conversations between women uncertain of what they should be feeling in the marital bed, heroines negotiating desire in a world which polices (and romanticises) female innocence, and the importance of experiencing ‘the pinnacle’: a Regency-coded euphemism for *ahem* climax.

Unsurprisingly for any hardcore fans, the show handles its subject matter with its usual charm and humour. But it did get me thinking: if the fictional women of Regency England were given so little education about the nature of their bodies, what of the real-life ladies of the Gilded Age?

The ‘Pinnacle’ and the Long History of Female Pleasure

Long before the Gilded Age, Western medical theory held that female pleasure mattered for conception. Classical authorities such as Aristotle and Galen advanced what historians often call the ‘two-seed’ model, in which both men and women were thought to produce generative seed. In some interpretations of this theory, female climax was considered part of successful reproduction.

Versions of these ideas circulated well into the early modern period. However, by the nineteenth century, medical thinking was shifting. Advances in anatomical study, alongside changing moral attitudes, increasingly separated female pleasure from reproductive necessity.

By the late Victorian era, mainstream British and American medical opinion did not require female orgasm for conception. Instead, a new cultural ideal emerged: the respectable woman as naturally modest, passionless, and even incapable of orgasm. According to the historian Nancy F. Cott, middle-class ideology in the nineteenth century increasingly framed women as morally superior and sexually restrained.

Yet this created a profound contradiction. While earlier traditions had acknowledged female physical response, Victorian morality often preferred not to speak of it at all. Passion, it seemed, was the remit of the men…

The (Mis)education of an Heiress

For elite daughters in Britain and the United States during the Gilded Age, education was extensive but selective.

Girls were trained in music, languages, literature, drawing, and deportment. They learned how to host, converse, and represent their families in society, with many packed off to fancy finishing schools in London, Paris, and New York to have their manners and accents polished to perfection.

What they did not usually receive was structured anatomical instruction.

Many mothers, themselves raised in cultures of restraint, offered only euphemistic explanations of marital duty; advice manuals emphasised modesty and obedience rather than pleasure. In 1857, William Acton wrote in The Functions and Disorders of the Reproductive Organs that ‘the majority of women… are not very much troubled with sexual feeling’. His claim, though debated even in its own time, was incredibly influential, becoming emblematic of Victorian assumptions about female desire.

William Kissam Vanderbilt was born on the 12th of December 1849, the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt and the son of William Henry Vanderbilt. By the time William reached adulthood, the Vanderbilt fortune was no longer a precarious achievement but a firmly entrenched institution. Railroads, shipping interests, and vast investments ensured financial security that would last generations.

Unlike his grandfather, William did not need to build an empire. His role was custodial. He belonged to the second generation of industrial heirs, men expected to preserve wealth, manage assets, and avoid scandal. Contemporary accounts describe him as reserved and private, traits well-suited to stewardship, if less effective in a society increasingly drawn to display.

For much of his early life, his inheritance alone guaranteed his relevance.

Wealth in a Changing World

By the 1870s, New York high society was shifting rapidly. New fortunes were rising, competition for recognition intensified, and social authority increasingly depended on public assertion rather than pedigree alone. Architecture, entertainment, and cultural patronage became tools of dominance.

William was well-positioned financially but temperamentally unsuited to this new mode of social competition. He preferred discretion to confrontation and stability to rivalry, instincts that ensured security, but offered little distinction in a crowded social landscape increasingly driven by the need to be ‘seen’. The tension between inherited authority and performative power was one William would deal with for most of his life.

Courtship and Calculation

William’s courtship of Alva Smith (1853-1933) unfolded within the tightly choreographed world of elite 1870s society, where marriage was as much about alignment as affection.

Introduced to William by her close friend, Consuelo Yznaga, at a Vanderbilt party, Alva had already distinguished herself as intelligent, striking, and acutely socially ambitious. William, meanwhile, brought one of the most powerful surnames in America and the immense fortune that accompanied it.

Their relationship developed at a moment when both stood to gain. For William, marriage offered stability and a partner who could navigate the increasingly competitive terrain of New York society. For Alva, the match represented access to extraordinary wealth and, crucially, a platform from which she could assert influence. Contemporary accounts suggest that Alva pursued the marriage with determination, fully aware of what the Vanderbilt name could offer her, while William appears to have been receptive rather than ardent (ah, true love).

The Origins of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, meaning ‘Fat Tuesday’, marks the final day of feasting before the beginning of Lent, the forty-day period of fasting and reflection in the Christian calendar. Its origins lie in medieval European carnival traditions, where communities indulged in rich food, drink, and celebration before the restraints of the religious season took hold.

These traditions travelled across the Atlantic with French and Spanish settlers and took root most firmly in New Orleans, where Catholic observance, colonial heritage, and later American influence combined. Over time, Mardi Gras evolved beyond its religious function, becoming a civic event that blurred the lines between ritual and spectacle.

By the 19th century, Mardi Gras in New Orleans was no longer simply a marker of the liturgical calendar. It had become a major social occasion, drawing on European pageantry while developing distinctly local traditions.

For the elite of Britain and the United States, Valentine’s Day, like most celebrations of the era, was less about spontaneous passion and more about performance. Every card, flower, and thoughtfully worded verse was weighed against reputation, lineage, and long-term advantage. Meanwhile, for the general population, the same day offered a rare chance to flirt, joke, and even insult with a freedom denied to those at the top of the social ladder.

In the Gilded Age, hearts beat loudly, but hierarchy was deafening.

The Origins of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is named for Saint Valentine, a shadowy figure shaped as much by legend as by fact. Thought to be a blend of early Christian martyrs executed in 3rd-century Rome, he later acquired a romantic reputation through tales of secret weddings and a farewell letter signed ‘From your Valentine’. While little reliable evidence survives, and his feast day was eventually dropped from the Church calendar, the myth endured.

Yet the association between Valentine’s Day and the romance we know and love (see what I did there?) today harks back to medieval England, and for that we have Chaucer to thank. In the late 1300s, the English writer famously connected St Valentine’s Day with love and the natural world in his 1381 poem, Parlement of Foules, helping to cement the date as a moment for romantic expression.

Fast forward to the 18th century, and Valentine’s Day was well established in Britain as an occasion for handwritten verses, symbolic gifts, and flirtatious exchanges, particularly among the literate urban population. Yet these early Valentines were personal and intimate, exchanged between individuals rather than marketed en masse.

Everything changed in the 19th century. Advances in printing, the availability of cheap paper, and crucially the introduction of the Uniform Penny Post in Britain in 1840 (a new service where letters could be sent across the country for one penny) transformed Valentine’s Day into a commercial and democratic holiday. Suddenly, romance could travel affordably and, if you so wished, anonymously…

By the time the Gilded Age dawned, Valentine’s Day had become a mass phenomenon. Yet how it was celebrated depended entirely on where one sat within the social order.

Romance with Rules: Love Among the Elite

For upper-class families, the gaiety of Valentine’s Day did not suspend the rules of polite society. If anything, it emphasised them.

Romantic gestures were expected to be tasteful, restrained, and appropriate to the stage of a relationship. Unsurprisingly, flowers were a popular choice, but they were never neutral. The Victorian language of flowers, or floriography, assigned specific meanings to blooms, turning bouquets into coded messages that could be eagerly analysed by recipients and their wider social circles.
