There is a particular kind of discomfort that arrives when every hour has already been assigned a purpose. In the Gilded Age, this was not unusual. For the elite, life was not simply busy or quiet, but rhythmically structured around seasons of visibility and withdrawal. Entire households moved to a shared calendar that dictated when life was meant to be seen, and when it was expected to fade into the background.

We often think of this world as endlessly social. Balls, dinners, Newport weekends, London Seasons. Yet what sits between these peaks is just as revealing: long stretches when nothing was supposed to happen at all. These pauses were not accidental. They were part of the system.

A Life Built Around Seasons

Elite society in the nineteenth century moved to a carefully timed calendar that governed both geography and behaviour.

In London, “the Season” concentrated political, marital and social activity into a defined period when Parliament was sitting, and aristocratic families returned to the capital. Townhouses filled, invitations multiplied, and visibility became almost a form of public duty. In New York, the rhythm was less formally codified but no less powerful, shifting between winter city life and the summer concentration of Newport, where a dense social world briefly intensified before dispersing again.

This was not a casual movement. It was an agreed choreography, reinforced by etiquette, invitation networks and the press. Newspapers reported arrivals and departures with the same seriousness as events themselves, tracking who was “in town” as a marker of relevance. To be absent at the wrong time could mean simply disappearing from the social record for months.

What Happened When the Season Ended

When the social calendar paused, houses did not simply become quieter. They changed function entirely.

City residences were shut or partially closed. Staff numbers were reduced, often dramatically. Drawing rooms that had been the centre of nightly entertaining became spaces of maintenance rather than display. Even correspondence shifted tone, moving from constant coordination to slower, more deliberate exchanges.

Three weeks before she became a countess-in-waiting, Alberta Sturges sat down at her desk at 12 Bruton Street, Berkeley Square, and wrote a hurried note to a nun in Calcutta.

Consider what else she might have been doing on the 3rd of July, 1905. London was at the very height of the Season. The trousseau had to be ordered, the gifts acknowledged, the breakfast arranged, the bridesmaids fitted, the hundred small negotiations of a fashionable wedding carried through. Alberta was American money marrying an English earldom, the most legible transaction the Edwardian drawing room knew how to read, and the social machinery around such a match was relentless. There were a thousand people she was expected to write to that week.

Instead she found a few minutes, apologised for having only a few minutes, and gave them to Margot.

I haven’t time for more than just a word, but in my new joy, I have been thinking much and often of you.

And then, on the envelope, in her own hand, an address that tells you almost everything about who Alberta Sturges really was:

Miss Margaret E. Noble. Sister Nivedita. 17 Bose Para Lane, Bagh Bazar, Calcutta, India.

The Friend in Calcutta

To understand why this letter matters, you have to understand who was going to open it on the other side of the world.

Margaret Elizabeth Noble was born in County Tyrone in 1867, the daughter of an Irish clergyman. She became a schoolteacher in London, clever and restless and hungry for something the conventional life could not give her, and in the autumn of 1895 she went to hear a visiting Hindu monk speak in a West End drawing room. The monk was Swami Vivekananda. The encounter rearranged her entire existence.

Three years later she sailed for India. Vivekananda initiated her into the vow of the celibate religious life and gave her a new name, Nivedita, which means “the dedicated one.” She settled in Calcutta, put on the plain dress of a Hindu widow, and in November 1898 opened a school for girls in the Bagbazar quarter of the city, teaching children whom almost no one else thought worth teaching. By 1905 she was one of the most remarkable Englishwomen alive: an educator, a writer, increasingly a voice in the early stirrings of Indian nationalism. She had given up comfort, country and name for a cause on the far side of the earth.

This was Alberta’s “Margot darling.” Not a debutante. Not a cousin from the Hudson Valley. A barefoot teacher in a Calcutta lane.

They had met through the same circle that shaped everything tender and serious in Alberta’s young life. Both women had sat at the feet of Vivekananda. Both were bound to the same luminous, eccentric, deeply devoted woman they each called by the same pet name, Tantine, the American Josephine MacLeod, who scattered letters across continents and held this whole spiritual family together by sheer force of love. “Tantine will have written you,” Alberta notes, “how happy I am, now soon to be married.” The news travelled along a private wire of seekers and mystics that ran from a London square to a Calcutta school, and Alberta wanted to send her own word down it.

Last month, in More Than Heiresses: The Women Who Transformed Their Own Fortunes, we briefly met one extraordinary woman whose story stood apart from even the most determined Gilded Age social climbers. She wasn’t born into wealth, she didn’t marry a millionaire, and she certainly didn’t inherit a fortune. Instead, she built one herself.

Her name was Madam C. J. Walker, and for more than a century, she has been celebrated as America’s first female self-made millionaire.

But was she?

Like many stories from the Gilded Age, the truth turns out to be rather more interesting than the headline.

From the Cotton Fields to the Wash Tub

Madam C. J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove on 23 December 1867 in Delta, Louisiana. She arrived in a world still reeling from the aftermath of the American Civil War. Her parents, Owen and Minerva Breedlove, had both been enslaved before emancipation, making Sarah the first child in her family to be born free.

Her childhood was marked by hardship. Orphaned by the age of seven, she moved to Mississippi with her older sister and later married at just fourteen, a decision she later suggested was partly to escape abuse at home. Widowed before she turned twenty, she supported herself and her young daughter, Lelia, by working as a laundress in St. Louis.

For years, she earned little more than a dollar a day.

When we think of the Gilded Age, we tend to picture fortunes being inherited rather than earned.

The era’s most famous women are often remembered as heiresses – daughters of railroad magnates, mining tycoons, and industrialists who carried vast fortunes into marriage. Their stories are filled with glittering ballrooms, grand estates, and transatlantic titles.

Yet not every wealthy woman of the Gilded Age was simply the beneficiary of someone else’s success.

Some inherited money and multiplied it. Some managed enormous investments. Others built businesses from the ground up. A remarkable few amassed fortunes entirely through their own determination, business acumen, and willingness to challenge expectations in a world that often assumed serious financial matters belonged exclusively to men.

In an age when women in Britain and America still faced significant legal and social restrictions, these women proved that wealth creation was not solely a male pursuit.

The Businesswoman Who Terrified Wall Street

No discussion of self-made wealth in the Gilded Age can begin anywhere other than with Hetty Green.

Born in Massachusetts in 1834 to a prosperous whaling family, Green inherited wealth but became famous for how she used it. While many women of her social standing relied on male relatives or advisers to manage investments, Green took complete control of her finances.

She studied markets, read financial reports, and made investment decisions herself. During periods of economic uncertainty, she frequently purchased assets that others considered risky, only to profit handsomely when markets recovered.

By the early twentieth century, she was widely regarded as one of the wealthiest women in America. Newspapers dubbed her the “Witch of Wall Street”, often portraying her as eccentric because she devoted so much attention to business. Yet behind the sensational headlines was an exceptionally capable investor who understood finance as well as many of her male contemporaries.

Green’s story reveals an uncomfortable truth for many observers of the time: women were perfectly capable of succeeding in finance when given the opportunity.

The Haircare Entrepreneur Who Built an Empire

While many Gilded Age fortunes originated in industry and railroads, some emerged from entirely different sources.

One of the most extraordinary examples was Madam C. J. Walker.

Born Sarah Breedlove in Louisiana in 1867, Walker’s early life bore little resemblance to the privileged backgrounds of many society women. She was born to formerly enslaved parents and faced considerable hardship during her youth.

After developing haircare products aimed at African American women, she built a thriving business that expanded across the United States and beyond.

Walker employed thousands of sales agents and established training programmes that provided economic opportunities for other women. By the time of her death in 1919, she had accumulated substantial wealth and was recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first self-made female millionaire in America.

So do get your tickets, because trust me, you will not want to miss this. I could barely move inside for the crowds, and I didn’t care one bit, because everywhere I turned there was something that made me want to stop and stare and quietly lose my mind with admiration.

A Robe That Held a Dynasty

The first thing that truly stops you is the Royal Christening Robe. Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841, made by her Scottish dressmaker Janet Sutherland from Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace, the very same materials used for Victoria’s own wedding dress the year before. Every royal baby wore this robe for the following 130 years. Princess Elizabeth was christened in it on the 29th of May, 1926, in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace.

One robe. A hundred and thirty years. I stood in front of it for quite a long time and felt rather overcome.

Two Little Girls in Matching Dresses

In the early years, it was the Queen Mother who dressed her daughters, and she had absolutely impeccable taste. Baby dresses, Liberty printed frocks, bloomers, fancy dress costumes, many from the London firm Smith and Co Limited. She became a devoted client of the Parisian couturier Jean Lanvin in the mid-1930s and acquired the most wonderful things for Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, those matching dresses the sisters wore being utterly iconic now, all lamé fabrics and shaped raised sleeves.

But the thing I cannot stop thinking about is the doll. Lanvin sent a pair of dolls to the Queen Mother for the princesses, porcelain faced, felt bodied, each with a complete miniature wardrobe. The doll’s dress was a tiny replica of the princesses' own, blush silk with lamé detail and a padded gold lamé belt. It is the sweetest, most poignant thing, because it reminds you that beneath all the ceremony and the history and the weight of it all, there were just two little girls playing dress-up. And one of them would become Queen.

These friendships provided companionship, support, introductions, entertainment, and occasionally a refuge from the relentless scrutiny of the social world.

For the wealthy women of Britain and America, friendship was often more than a personal bond. It could shape social fortunes, influence marriages, support charitable causes, and even help redefine what it meant to be a woman at the turn of the twentieth century.

In many ways, the Gilded Age had its own version of the group chat.

Public behaviour was scrutinised, and private lives were often discussed in newspapers and drawing rooms alike.

She had been waiting a long time to feel this.

Alberta Sturges—twenty-seven years old in the summer of 1905, American, a woman who had spent her twenties moving between New York and London and Paris, absorbing ideas and people and spiritual teachings with an appetite that never quite found its object—had not married young. She had watched friends marry. She had sat with Vivekananda in the gardens at Ridgely Manor. She kept diaries full of self-examination. She had been, as she wrote herself, tired out by a long fight that covered many black years, uncertain whether love of the right kind would ever arrive.

And then, on July 25th, 1905, in St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge, she married George Charles Montagu, heir to the Earldom of Sandwich, a man of quiet, serious character who had been patient with her doubts and whose face, she wrote to her aunt Josephine MacLeod, was “so beautifully full of God’s love.”

Last month, we met her son.

The charming, sociable, endlessly entertaining Bertie, later Edward VII, who spent much of the Gilded Age collecting friends, admirers, dinner invitations, and occasionally his mother’s disapproval. If Bertie represented the glittering social world that would later define the Edwardian age, then his mother stood for something very different.

For much of the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria became the embodiment of duty, respectability, family life, and moral seriousness, so much so that an entire era would eventually bear her name.

Yet the woman behind the legend was considerably more complicated than the stern widow who gazes out from countless portraits. During her sixty-three-year reign, Victoria witnessed railways, telegraphs, industrialisation, photography, and the rise of vast fortunes on both sides of the Atlantic. By the time she died in 1901, Britain sat at the centre of a global empire, and Victoria herself had become one of the most recognisable women in the world.

The Little Princess Nobody Expected

When Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in May 1819, few expected her to become queen. The daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, she stood behind several relatives in the line of succession and seemed unlikely ever to inherit the throne. A series of deaths and childless marriages changed everything.

They had been having a heavenly time.

Alberta and George Montagu—she thirty-two, he thirty-nine, the boys safely left at Hinchingbrooke with Uncle Hinch—had set off in the spring of 1910 on the kind of journey that only the Edwardian upper classes could manage: six months across Japan, Korea, Manchuria, and China, with letters of introduction to ambassadors, railway officials, and Buddhist art historians, stopping wherever curiosity led them. They had stayed at the British Embassy in Tokyo as guests of Sir Claude MacDonald. They had lunched with Theodore Roosevelt’s sister. They had motored into villages where no European had ever been seen, and where, Alberta noted with amusement, her pale hair caused more sensation than anything else.

By early May they were in Nara, the ancient former capital south of Kyoto, surrounded by temples and tame deer and the silence of a place that had been sacred for twelve hundred years. The Imperial Hotel was full of English travellers. Everything, as Alberta wrote to her husband’s uncle back in Huntingdon, was wonderful.

And then, on the morning of May 7th, they arrived in Kyoto and heard the news.

Long before pampered pooches were travelling first class, sporting monogrammed jumpers, and somehow attracting more admirers on Instagram than their owners, the elite of the nineteenth century knew the social power of a well-bred pet.

From drawing rooms to country clubs, handbag-sized dogs trotted faithfully behind heiresses, hunting hounds loped beside shooting parties, and society photographers increasingly found themselves asked to capture not just their wealthy sitters, but their pampered pets as well.

In a world obsessed with pedigree, bloodlines, and proving one’s place in society, perhaps it was only natural that dogs, in particular, became little extensions of the family brand. What’s more surprising is how soft-hearted these furry and feathery companions made some of the most ferocious figures of the age…

Edith Wharton’s Tiny Terriers

Few figures capture this better than author Edith Wharton, whose sharp observations of upper-class hypocrisy have inspired generations of readers. Wharton may have spent much of her literary career dissecting the social codes of old New York with surgical precision, but away from the page, she reserved some of her greatest tenderness for her dogs.

Photographs from The Mount, the extraordinary Massachusetts estate she designed in 1902, show Wharton in gardens, on terraces, and beside clipped hedges with small terriers at her side, often perched comfortably in her lap or following her through the immaculate grounds. Her letters are dotted with references to her dogs’ routines, ailments, personalities, and occasional mischief, written with a warmth that feels markedly different from the icy social calculations of some of her fictional characters.

Biographer Hermione Lee notes that dogs became especially important to Wharton during difficult periods in her personal life, particularly as her marriage to Edward Robbins Wharton deteriorated, and her literary fame grew.

Perhaps at a time when society women were expected to remain polished, gracious, and emotionally self-contained, dogs offered something no drawing room ever could: uncomplicated affection.

It’s a Lapdog’s Life

By the 1870s and 1880s, small companion dogs had become firmly woven into the visual language of elite womanhood. Studio portraits, cabinet cards, and illustrated magazines increasingly featured fashionable women seated in velvet chairs with sweet little spaniels curled neatly in their laps, Italian greyhounds sitting to attention, or tiny Pomeranians gazing solemnly at the camera.

But these animals were not chosen at random – breeds such as King Charles spaniels, toy poodles, Maltese dogs, and increasingly fashionable Pomeranians projected refinement, delicacy, and domestic gentility, all qualities Victorian culture eagerly associated with femininity. To appear with a small, impeccably groomed dog suggested its owner had the sort of life in which one had both the time and the resources to care for something ornamental.

(And, of course, the staff).

Because while the image of a society hostess strolling down Fifth Avenue with a tiny dog on her arm may seem charming, somebody still had to handle the feeding, the grooming, the brushing, and, one assumes, the less photogenic realities of dog ownership.

Long before the daughters of America’s Gilded Age were crossing the Atlantic armed with enough cash to rescue half the crumbling country houses of Britain, somebody had to make the money – and not always inherited money, either.

Not the kind that arrived neatly packaged in old ledgers, under respectable surnames. No, the fortunes that built the Gilded Age were often newer, louder, and infinitely more controversial than that. They came from railway lines, oil wells, steel mills, department stores, and banking houses where fortunes could rise, collapse, or double before luncheon.

In many cases, these fortunes appeared so quickly that old-money families scarcely knew what to make of them. One moment, a man was the son of a ferryman, a dry goods clerk, or an immigrant shopkeeper. Next, he was building marble mansions on Fifth Avenue and marrying his daughters to European dukes.

But of course, making money and being accepted by society were never quite the same thing. And nowhere was that truth more painfully obvious than in Gilded Age America.

The Commodore: From Ferry Boats to Fortune

Few stories capture the spirit of American self-invention quite like that of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the man who would become known simply as The Commodore.

Born in 1794 on Staten Island to a modest Dutch-American farming and ferrying family, Vanderbilt left school at eleven and, according to family accounts preserved in early biographies, borrowed one hundred dollars from his mother to purchase his first small sailing vessel. It was hardly the sort of beginning that suggested European titles, private railway cars, or mansions in its future, but Vanderbilt possessed something that old New York often distrusted almost as much as it admired: ruthless clarity.

Most of the American heiresses who crossed the Atlantic in the Gilded Age to marry into European aristocracy are remembered, if at all, for their weddings. The diamonds. The titles. The transactional exchange of old money for new blood that defined an era.

Muriel White is remembered for something else entirely.

Born in 1880 — three years after our own Alberta Sturges, three years after Consuelo Vanderbilt — Muriel was the daughter of Henry White, one of the most distinguished American diplomats of his generation: first secretary at the London Embassy for eight years, then Ambassador to Italy, then Ambassador to France. She grew up between Paris and London, spoke six languages fluently, moved in the highest circles of European society, and had been engaged several times — including, briefly, to Austin Chamberlain — before she married, at the age of twenty-nine, a Prussian count named Hermann Seherr-Thoss and moved to his estate in Silesia, now Poland.

What followed was one of the most remarkable stories of the entire dollar princess era. I sat down with Richard Hutto, author of The Countess and the Nazis, to find out more.

The Man Behind the Book

Richard Hutto came to the subject, as so many good historians do, through a personal connection. In 1977, as a young appointment secretary in the Carter White House, he was sent to London for the Silver Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II — and became, he says, a committed Anglophile on the spot. Years later, when he met his wife and learned that her great-aunt had been “married off at sixteen to the Earl of Craven and basically told she had nothing to say about it,” the question that had been forming in the back of his mind crystallised into something urgent.

“I understand the wives,” he told me. “You and I both call them pushy mamas — I understand that. But why were the husbands willing to write twenty-million-dollar checks to go abroad?” That question — what the aristocracy was getting out of the bargain — has driven his research ever since.

His new book, The Gilded Finale: The Bradley Martin Ball and the End of the Gilded Age, is out in January and promises to be essential reading for anyone fascinated by this world: the Bradley Martin Ball was given by his wife’s own great-great-grandparents, and the book contains original photographs that have never previously been published. But it is The Countess and the Nazis — March 2025 — that stopped me in my tracks.

Muriel White’s marriage to Count Seherr-Thoss was not arranged — it was, in its way, a love match. The Count had followed her to Berlin for some court functions, fallen in love with her, and three weeks later arrived at her door to ask for her hand. Her parents only found out she was engaged when they read it in the newspaper, because they were away.

Before a Gilded Age heiress ever descended a marble staircase or glided through Newport ballrooms in a gown worth more than many people earned in a year, she had already been dressed, pinned, laced, padded, buttoned, and, quite possibly, mildly compressed into submission.

To modern eyes, the fashions of the late nineteenth century can appear effortless: elegant silk skirts, corseted waists, and gloves like a second skin for ladies, while men appeared permanently pressed, polished, and suspiciously comfortable in their towering top hats. Yet behind every seemingly effortless Gilded Age ensemble lay extraordinary engineering, social messaging, and sometimes (particularly for the women) outright physical endurance.

Because during the late nineteenth century, clothing was architecture, and from the foundations to the finishing touches, each layer had a part to play.

First Things First: The Chemise

Long before the corset entered the picture, a well-dressed woman of the 1870s or 1880s began with her underlayers. The first was typically a lightweight linen or cotton chemise, worn directly against the skin and designed to protect the more expensive outer garments from perspiration, body oils, and the general indignities of everyday life. Beneath these sat drawers, often open at the crotch for easy bathroom breaks.

It may not sound especially glamorous, but these humble cotton foundations were essential. Laundering fine silk bodices was both expensive and risky, and even the wealthiest households preferred to wash undergarments far more frequently than the garments everyone actually saw.

In other words, before fashion could be fabulous, it first had to be practical… at least somewhere.

There is a particular kind of erasure that happens to women in history. Not a dramatic burning of the papers or a deliberate act of censorship – just a slow, quiet disappearing. A name dropped from the guest register. A set of letters that never made it to the archive. A collection of exquisite miniature portraits, scattered to the four corners of the world, gathering dust in houses whose owners have no idea what they own.

That is the story of Amalia Kussner.

I first came across her name while researching my own corner of the Gilded Age, and I’ll admit that when I started digging, I wasn’t prepared for quite how extraordinary she was. Or quite how thoroughly she had been forgotten.

Recently, I sat down with Kathleen Langone – author, podcaster, and the woman who has dedicated years to bringing Amalia back into the light – and what she told me stopped me in my tracks more than once. This article is our beginning. And we are asking for your help.

An American in the Courts of Europe

Amalia Kussner was a miniature portrait painter, American-born, who rose to prominence in the 1890s and painted her way through some of the most storied drawing rooms in the world. Long before he wore a crown, Bertie had become a kind of nineteenth-century celebrity. And across the Atlantic, where America’s newly minted millionaires were busy turning industrial fortunes into social ambition, they could not seem to look away…

Born to Rule… But Rather More Interested in the Guest List

Born in November 1841 at Buckingham Palace, Albert Edward was the eldest child of Victoria and her beloved husband, Prince Albert, and from the moment of his birth, it was assumed that he would one day embody the moral and intellectual ideals his parents held so dear.

Albert, in particular, approached his son’s education with almost Teutonic seriousness, overseeing a programme of study so rigid that one can only imagine even the tutors occasionally needing a restorative brandy. Bertie was expected to master languages, history, constitutional theory, religion, military discipline, and the art of behaving impeccably while everyone watched.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, Bertie seemed far more interested in people than in books, in horses than in philosophy, and in dinner parties than in constitutional theory.
