They counted the bridesmaids, described the gowns, listed the flowers, and carefully named the families involved, as though the marriage itself might be verified by chiffon and good connections. Eight bridesmaids in white, they reported, Montagu cousins alongside American relations, all perfectly arranged to reassure readers that this was not simply a wedding, but a successful social absorption. One could almost hear the collective sigh of approval rustling through the society pages.
