If you were a woman in the Gilded Age and felt a little faint, anxious or simply fed up with society’s demands, there was a ready diagnosis for your condition: hysteria.
This was great, and it's important to remember all that was happening during the time period! I am so glad you pointed out the thought about "the uterus being the root of distress."
I think it is funny because there has always been a fixation on needing an heir, which of course, you need a uterus for, but then fault is also found with it! This seems to have been a repeating theme through much of history, but I just always find it ironic. Thanks for a great piece!
So interesting how people grasp at odd fads. The Magic Mountain is rather eye opening, as the reader watches a perfectly healthy young man deem himself “ill” and proceed to spend his life isolating from all he fears in life - work, family, marriage, etc.
The trope of the hysterical woman! It's a sticky one and still around, living under many guises!
A spa/resort vacation for stress issues sounds just about perfect in today’s society. Maybe one that bans screens.

The ‘road to welville’ by TC Boyle ’ is a fantastic semi fiction book ( and movie) around Dr kellog and Dr Post. Really a great read
What a treat to read......guess the terms "peri-menopausal" and "menopause" had yet to be created by the medical community........just a thought!
